Family Support

Family support refers to the assistance provided to individuals and families as they cope with various life challenges. It involves empowering families with the resources and tools they need to maintain healthy functioning, communication and relationships. Family support can take many forms, including individual therapy for family members, group counselling sessions, couples therapy, parenting education, and family mediation. The aim is to help family members develop positive and constructive ways of communicating, resolving conflicts, making decisions and adapting to change. Family support is often provided by trained counsellors who are experienced in working with families and capable of tailoring their approach to meet the unique needs and circumstances of the families they work with. Effective family support can go a long way in minimizing stress, enhancing communication and improving family relationships.

7 Reasons why families may need support
Communication breakdown
Counseling addresses strained or ineffective communication, resolving conflicts and misunderstandings.
Conflict resolution
Effective conflict resolution requires active listening, empathy, and a willingness to understand and respect different perspectives.
Abuse
Dealing with abuse in families is a complex and sensitive issue, often involves emotional, physical, or sexual mistreatment from a family member. The first step towards dealing with abuse is to recognize and acknowledge it. Victims may struggle with shame and fear, making it challenging to talk about.
Addiction
Addiction within a family can be a heartbreaking and damaging experience, as it can lead to strained relationships, financial issues, and emotional turmoil for all members involved.
Parent / Child relationship issue
Strong communication, mutual respect and active listening can help address and resolve parent-child relationship issues. It is important to acknowledge both perspectives and work towards finding solutions that are beneficial for everyone.
Physical Health
Physical health issues can affect families in different ways, not just the individual experiencing them. They can put strain on relationships, lead to financial burdens and negatively impact the mental health of family members.
Mental health / Wellbeing
Mental health and wellbeing within a family is crucially important for overall happiness and success. It can help foster healthy relationships and communication, decrease stress levels, and create a supportive and positive environment for each family member.

My approach with you...

I can provide bespoke parenting packages for parent/s carers who are struggling. This can be short- or long-term work.

I have been a Family Support Worker for over 14 years. I work in schools’ settings, and in the family home. Trained by the Family Caring Trust. I run a number of programmes: Pram to Primary, Five to Fifteen and Teenager programmes. These programmes run best with groups of parents. However, most of my work now is done with one family at a time, working solely with the parents. When there is a family crisis, I often suggest FGC Family Group Conference, where I invite the whole family including extended family members, eg: grandparents and close relatives.

I offer practical help and emotional support to families experiencing short or long-term difficulties.

The focus of my role is to provide support to parents, empowering them to address various challenges, reducing problems and risks.

Sessions usual last one hour and I recommend between 4 and 8 sessions. Please contact me regarding cost for your specific needs.

If you believe I can be helpful, don’t hesitate in contacting me.
